[video] Funfact: In Palmtree Panic, Amy actually behaves differently whether you let her hug you or not! Before hugging you, her behavior is rather shy-ish. After hugging Sonic however, she gets all energetic and happy as she starts jumping, as if to show she wants more hugs!

[video] Found out about this pretty recently, but in the Preview demo of Sonic Adventure 2 there is a particularly chilling unused voiceline of Sonic screaming in pure fear and pain. While it is technically used for the Biolizard's roar, it is so heavily filtered that you can't hear it.

[image] I honestly wish that Honey's purple eyelids became part of her actual design instead of them just being colored the same color has her fur, she looks prettier and they look much better to begin with in my opinion.

[image] I really love this awesome silhouette of Sonic's head used in SEGA Joypolis stores during the 90s on Sonic products, it looks so insanely cool. I honestly prefer this logo much more than the design Sonic Team uses for their logo.

[video] I went out of bounds in the World hub from Sonic Jam and I was quite surprised by how surprisingly big the render distance was even if it was empty. It really goes to show how far Sonic Team had gotten on the Saturn engine for SA1 even if this minigame is just some crumbs of it.

[image] I'd never thought someone would find the entire video, but it happened!! It's so cool seeing the Beta Sonic Adventure 1 model for Sonic in action alongside an early model for Tails too!

[video] One pretty obscure reward you can unlock in the Mega-CD version of Sonic CD is the "You are the Greatest Player" screen! This screen is pretty cool because you get to see the all of characters interact with eachother! It's sadly missing in the 2011 remake due to its obscurity.

[image] As much as I love SA1's visuals, I honestly agree with this. It's really a shame they decided to throw out the colorful landscapes for most Sonic games (Until Heroes) in favor of more realistic ones to showcase the capabilities of the DC. it's apparent since the first level.

[image] Really nitpicky but I really miss when the coloring of Sonic's vehicles were based off of the coloring of his boots (Red, white and yellow/gold). It was a cool gimmick he had which was a lot more unique and interesting than having his vehicles colored off of his entire palette.

[image] I love how Sonic's original design's cute and endearing appearance really help facilitate that he has a heart of gold, it also makes moments where he is especially cool stand out more as well. Which his modern design sadly removes this nuance to emphasize on his visual coolness.

[image] The fact that the 1UP monitor icon seen in modern games has better eye dominance and better shaped ears than the actual main Sonic model of all things is hilarious to me like, just look at this LMAO.

[image] Pretty interesting to look at the differences for Naoto Ohshima's first Sonic reference sheet from Sonic 1 and his later one. Differences like his tweaked design having smaller pupils, eyeshine, more use of brows, noodlier limbs, his quills changing shapes for expressions, etc.

[image] I really like whenever Sonic media shows the exaggerated motion of Sonic's transitional state into his rolling form because it looks really cool. This extra bit of animation should really be incorporated in more games because it makes Sonic's animations a lot better imo.

[image] Funfact : Early in Sonic CD's development, the Stardust Speedway Act 2 Eggman statue was originally meant to be also visible in the distance of the background in Act 1! Strangely enough, a similar Eggman statue can be seen in the Time Attack image for Stardust Speedway.

[image] I was looking at the pages of the Beep! Megadrive Magazine and I think I may have come across the best official iteration of the Sonic 1 title screen. It honestly is so cool to see this early piece of Sonic 1 artwork be rendered and it looks genuinely awesome in my opinion.

[image] Not gonna lie, it'd be great if we got to see Tails sparkly pupils more often. (Especially in the games!) They don't really seem to get used as often in Modern Sonic material which is really a shame because it's such a tiny detail that helps to make him look all the more cuter.

[image] Just beat Sonic Drift 2! I really like this ending picture lol. It's kinda cute how to avoid problems with the limited palette of the Game Gear, they made the little photo in sepia so that every characters could be shown. Though, it indirectly gave it an "older" feel.

[image] I'm so glad they decided to reference this artwork from Sonic Drift 2 for his render in Crossworlds.

[image] Big fan of Sonic artwork where it's just the silhouette of Sonic's face in a black background, they look really cool in my opinion.

[image] I really like whenever Classic Eggman looks much more off-putting/scary than he does usually at times. This off-puttingness is best achieved when his eyebrows aren't too visible (or completely absent for that matter) in my opinion.

[video] Funfact : Sonic The Fighters actually has unused voicelines for all of the characters deep within the game's files! Here's what some of those unused voicelines sound like!

[video] Speaking of Sonic media from Europe, there's also these cute short animations from France for Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 used right before longer commercials for them played. Sonic's animation is pretty fluid and expressive in those too!

[image] Another small design preference I have with Classic Sonic is when he doesn't have this permanent brow on his face. It's removal really makes his face feel a bit more "smooth" and nice in my opinion.

[image] Classic Sonic's stock artwork from the 2010s that uses "updated" versions of artwork from the 90s stock artwork kinda pisses me off because they're changed ever so slightly and end up looking so worser than the original artwork. At times, they look downright horrendous.

[video] One pretty interesting little detail about Knuckles that was seemingly forgotten about is that Knuckles actually hates strong sunshine. Which you can actually see in the Sonic OVA in this scene, only removing his shades once the sun is hidden.

[image] A lot of Sonic's sprites from Sonic CD beat this one really easily in my opinion lol.

[image] I find it interesting how Sonic Team left Sonic and Amy's relationship in Sonic CD mostly left up to the players interpretation depending on if you wanted to actually interact with her or not.

[video] I was playing Sonic CD the other day when I discovered this really weird glitch where Sonic's voice would get REALLY low pitched when you get a life while hitting a signpost. (I disabled the other channels to make it clearer.)

[image] Funfact : During development, some Sonic CD levels had completely different palettes! Personally, I prefer some of them over their final because they look prettier and they communicate the atmosphere of those stages much better despite the redundancy of blue in my opinion.

[image] I'l always find it pretty funny how the Japanese Sonic 1 boxart render is SEGA's favorite render of him lol. Reusing it practically every chance they get for some reason lol.

[image] As much as think Sonic's model in Superstars looks good, I really wish it had way less emphasis on the lips and more on the expressions themselves because they don't look all that good sometimes imo. Though, this isn't a new issue and it has been discussed more in-depth prior.

[image] I don't understand why this is STILL a debate when there has been more canon media that contradicts them being shoes. Tailstube for example, showing that he wears "no show socks" which are way too small to be rolled up socks. (His creator also confirmed they ARE boots.)

[image] Took me quite a while to find where those manga panels came from, but they actually are from the "Sega Game Gag 1 page comics"! The artwork is really adorable and there's multiple pages for Sonic! Here's some of my favorite panels from the first Sonic section.

[video] I love whenever Sonic media exaggeratedly stretch out Sonic's quills to put further visual emphasis on how fast he's going on top of making him look cooler. (He's not really going fast in the gif here but you get the picture lol.)

[image] One thing I've always found odd is how most 90s Classic Sonic games never really showed Sonic's golden boot buckles. Even as far back as Sonic 1, multiple sonic statues done by Taku Makino were created as reference for the animators and his gold buckles WERE there.

[image] I've noticed that the pilot and his family from Sonic's backstory all share similarities to Sonic, Amy and Tails. The pilot has that constant “frowny” face Sonic has aswell as spiky hairs, his wife has similar bangs to Amy and for their daughter, just look at her twintails lol.

[image] Funfact : Sonic CD was originally going to have much more unique and different looking flowers from one another based on the zone they were in! Here's what some of them originally looked like!

[image] The concept of Sonic being actually born in the 1940s but still being keeping his youthfulness is really intriguing to me personally. This would mean he was actually both 44 and 16 at the same time during the events of Sonic 1. Funny enough, he is 16 years younger than Eggman.

[image] My favorite genre of Tails artwork probably has to be the ones where he sits adorably on the floor, lol. Genuinely wish we got to see more of him being an adorable kid nowadays.

[image] One pretty cool detail from the 90s Sonic mangas is that Michael Jackson and Sonic wear the exact same boots! While it is a pretty obscure detail, it's a really cute way to tie in with one of Sonic's design inspirations in my opinion!

[image] While there's some truth to this, it ain't exactly true either. Sonic has only really been this lightish blue color in Japan for only early Sonic 1 promotional material among very few outside material. (Like the Sonic OVA for example.) Otherwise, his fur was mostly dark.

[image] It was probably done unintentionally, but the Sonic & Knuckles logo being an eclipse is actually genius considering the design philosophy that went into creating Knuckles. (Sonic "the sun", being slightly obscured by Knuckles "the moon".)

[image] Really random observation, but it's kind of interesting that at one point *most* animal characters designed at SEGA from the Sonic franchise had monoeyes just like Sonic has during the period *mostly* before Sonic 2. Before Tails, fox characters were drawn with monoeyes too.

[image] One detail about old promotional Sonic artwork that I love is how seriously Sonic takes car racing. Being the fastest on foot isn't enough for him, he also needs to be the fastest thing ever, especially when others are even with him in speed which, his face says it all lol.

[image] Pretty small detail, but it would be pretty cool to see Knuckles dislike of sunshine in newer Sonic media. It's pretty unimportant and all but I think it's a pretty cool and unique detail from the others, which is the reason why he wore shades in media like the OVA at the time.

[video] Funfact: The background of Sonic 1's special stages was actually inspired by Sony's promotional film "Infinite Escher" which released in 1990, a year before Sonic 1 released! Here's a side by side comparison!

[image] Pretty minor nitpick, but I kinda wish the rendered versions of Totoya's S2 artwork by Akira Watanabe were a *little* closer to Totoya's lineart. Like, as much as I love Akira Wanabe's artwork, the way he based Sonic's face of his S1 boxart and not the lineart feels off imo.

[image] While this is a subjective topic, I honestly think Sonic's original design (The tweaked 1993 design specifically) has to be the best one in my opinion for its sheer versatility in settings and artstyles whether he's chilling or pissed and etc.

[image] Their Shogaku Gonensei proportions are a bit better than their concept artwork proportions in my opinion, especially Mighty since he has more meat on his bones. (Unrelated to the post, but Mighty is meant to have a tan colored tail by the way.)
